Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tempe’s bustling Mill Avenue district, Matsuri Izakaya on Mill offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that captivates both locals and visitors alike. Specializing in traditional ramen and izakaya-style fare, this cozy eatery immerses you in the rich flavors and warm atmosphere reminiscent of Japan’s lively street side eateries.
At Matsuri Izakaya, the culinary offerings are a delightful symphony of textures and tastes. Their Matsuri Special Ramen is an absolute standout — a perfectly balanced broth infused with tender pork chashu, softboiled eggs, and fresh green onions, delivering a depth of umami that warms the soul with every slurp. For those seeking something heartier, the Kakuni Udon enchants with its housemade savory broth and melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly. The Samurai Ramen adds a robust pork cutlet to the mix, achieving a satisfying harmony between crunchy exterior and tender, flavorful meat inside.
Beyond ramen, the menu showcases delectable bites like Takoyaki — crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside octopus balls bursting with rich flavor — and the meticulously crafted Unagi Hand Roll that pairs smoky eel with fluffy rice wrapped in fresh seaweed. Light, refreshing options such as Edamame and Salmon Sashimi offer a perfect contrast to the hearty dishes.
One cannot leave without indulging in their signature Fruit Sando, a heavenly fluffy bread sandwich packed with sweetened whipped cream and seasonal fruits. This dessert is a refreshing, delicate finale after a savory feast. Complementing the food is an intriguing selection of Japanese soft drinks and traditional beverages — from the effervescent and nostalgic Ramune in unique flavors like Yuzu and Lychee, to the creamy, tangy Calpico juices that refresh the palate.
The atmosphere at Matsuri Izakaya on Mill truly elevates the dining experience. Customers often remark on the immersive vibe — with anime visuals playing subtly in the background, you feel transported to an inviting corner of Japan. The space strikes a wonderful balance between lively and relaxed; it's especially recommended to visit on Thursday evenings when it’s calm enough to savor your meal quietly yet still lively with good energy. The efficient modern ordering system via iPads or phone, paired with attentive yet unobtrusive service, lets you focus entirely on your meal and company.
Patrons appreciate the abundance of customization, including chicken broth options for ramen and a diverse range of appetizers that lend themselves to sharing and sampling. While some note that ingredient modifications aren’t always available through all ordering platforms, the kitchen’s consistent delivery of flavor and portion size never disappoints.
Whether you’re a ramen aficionado, a traveler with a penchant for Japanese cuisine, or someone looking for a relaxed yet culturally rich dining spot in Tempe, Matsuri Izakaya on Mill delivers on all fronts. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a sensory journey through Japan’s vibrant culinary traditions, expertly crafted with heart and precision.
I love the vibe and the atmosphere! Ramen is amazing and have various options to choose from! They're bar is also top notch. With a variety of Japanese sake and drinks to choose from. Anime plays in the background making you feel like youre part of the anime! Try it out you'd love it. And best time to got are Thursday evenings very calm!
Everything about the food portion of this restaurant is pretty great. I've ordered ramen from them multiple times and never been disappointed. The only thing lacking is the way orders are placed. Neither in-person nor DoorDash orders allow for ingredient modifications. I'm not talking about free add-ons, I'm talking about the ability to remove an ingredient due to dietary or allergy restrictions, or simple personal preference. Also, ordering through DoorDash doesn't let me order ramen without including a paid add-on. This should be an easy fix. Once the updates are made to make add-ons optional and allow ingredient removal (or just enable the ability to include special instructions), I'd be happy to change my star rating.
I found the ramen delicious and loved that there were so many add on options as well a chicken broth options. I think the chaotic area it is in (a busy downtown college are) may have lowered its rankings but it really was great when I had it on a Monday - chill vibe - again unique that it had chicken broth options and tons of appetizers. Easy self serve water and iPad order as you eat option, then can call the waiter - very modern. Outdoor and indoor seating.
My partner and I tried this cute place out on Saturday night. He had the beef udon, I opted for the spicy vegan ramen. Both were very flavorful and delish! The atmosphere is reminiscent of the streets of Japan. Definitely excited to go back and explore more on the menu.
Had a great meal here, delicious miso soup, beef croquettes, and pork katsu curry plate. Ordering and payment was done via your phone or a provided tablet. Service was quick friendly and helpful, but seemed to leave you alone unless you asked for something, a plus in my opinion. Will be back!
BEST AZ JAPANESE FOOD Ate there twice!!!! In a week!! So good I love their pork katsu, and the rice is such good quality! The miso soup is perfect and there’s so many little tofu in it! And we liked the matcha ice cream as well (bf rates 10/10)!!
